Bowel cancer
Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK and the second biggest cancer killer. Nearly 43,000 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer every year in the UK. The FIT test is currently used by the NHS in over 50’s to screen for bowel cancer. However more than 2,600 people under 50 are diagnosed each year in the UK. These individuals will be missed by the screening programme and therefore diagnosis won’t come until they develop symptoms and go through the NHS pathway for diagnosis. Bowel cancer is treatable and curable especially if diagnosed early. Nearly everyone survives bowel cancer if diagnosed at the earliest stage. However, this drops significantly as the disease develops.
FIT Testing
The FIT test requires a stool sample taken at home and sent to our laboratory. The test analyses the sample to identify whether you have occult blood in your faeces, which can be a sign of colon cancer, bowel cancer, polyps, colitis or diverticulitis.
In the early stages, gastrointestinal problems like these may not present any symptoms like those listed above, and can only be picked up by finding small traces of blood in stool samples, so it is very important to check regularly.

How to access the test
Our FIT tests are available to order online through our partner Goodbody. You will be sent a sample collection kit to your home address, and you then collect the sample and post back to our lab using the pre-paid Royal Mail postage bag. Goodbody will deliver your results and help you decide what to do next.
You can also order the FIT test directly from CCL for £40. We can return your results to your NHS GP for no extra charge, or our Private GP can review and deliver the results directly to you for an additional £30.
