Why is early detection in bowel cancer so important?
The incredible work of Dame Deborah James, aka BowelBabe, raised awareness and reduced stigma of bowel cancer in younger generations, along with illustrating the importance of early detection.
Why early detection matters with bowel cancer
Did you know that around 16,000 people die from bowel cancer each year – it’s the UK’s second biggest cancer killer. However, if this disease is diagnosed early it is treatable and curable. An estimated 9 in 10 people will survive bowel cancer if diagnosed at the earliest stage.*
How CCL can support bowel cancer detection
CCL has a range of tests available to support the bowel cancer pathway – the latest is opening up the availability of the FIT test (Faecal Immunochemical Test) to all. The FIT test is currently used by the NHS in over 50’s to screen for bowel cancer. However more than 2,600 people under 50 are diagnosed each year in the UK.* These individuals will be missed by the screening programme and therefore diagnosis won’t come until they develop symptoms and go through the NHS pathway for diagnosis. If you have any concerns or family history this test can either put your mind at ease or make sure anything to be concerned about is picked up early.
What are the symptoms of bowel cancer?
Symptoms can include:
· Bleeding from your bottom and/or blood in your poo
· A persistent and unexplained change in bowel habit
· Unexplained weight loss
· Extreme tiredness for no obvious reason
· A pain or lump in your tummy
Most people with these symptoms don’t have bowel cancer but if you feel something isn’t right get checked out.
So, as Dame Deborah said – check your poo. Or let us with the FIT test. Early diagnosis saves lives.
